Latin American Sustainable Investment Forum Is Launched
    by Robert Kropp

The Colombian Securities Exchange, Sustainalytics, and Deloitte drive the formation of the regional network which aims to increase collaboration and enhance knowledge relating to sustainable investment.

Investors in almost every region of the world have benefited from the work of sustainable investment forums, from which they have learned about the incorporation of environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG) factors into their investment decision-making. Just as importantly, the forums have provided a platform for collaboration that has resulted in many instances of successful shareowner engagement with corporations.

In the US, sustainable investors are represented by US SIF – The Forum for Sustainable and Responsible Investment, the vision of which is “a world in which investment capital helps build a sustainable and equitable economy.”

Until recently, only Latin America lacked such a forum for investors and others interested in building a sustainable economy. The lack of a sustainable investment forum in Latin America has been somewhat surprising, given the proactive efforts by the Brazilian Stock Exchange to have corporations headquartered there report on sustainability issues. The Colombian Securities Exchange (BVC) has also taken steps to increase awareness of sustainability issues among investors and corporations there.

The absence of such a forum in Lati America was addressed recently, when the formation of the Latin American Sustainable Investment Forum (LatinSIF). According to the sustainable investment research firm Sustainalytics, LatinSIF “aims to create a network among the region’s financial and corporate players to collaborate and share knowledge about responsible investment.”

Sustainalytics, along with BVC and Deloitte, were instrumental in driving the formation of LatinSIF. In September, LatinSIF joined with the United Nations' Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) for a sustainable investment roadshow in Chile and Colombia. “Audiences were introduced to the LatinSIF and guided through the key issues and concepts related to responsible investment and its role in Latin America's business environment,” Sustainalytics stated.

This week, the roadshow will resume in Peru.
