BP Among Companies Removed from Global Sustainability Index
    by Robert Kropp

The NASDAQ OMX CRD Global Sustainability 50 Index announces semi-annual ranking of companies taking leadership roles in sustainability performance reporting.

The NASDAQ OMX Group, the world's largest exchange company, announced recently its semi-annual update of companies listed on its NASDAQ OMX CRD Global Sustainability 50 Index, an equity index that provides a benchmark for the stocks of companies that are traded on a major US stock exchange and have taken a leadership role in sustainability performance reporting.

Twelve companies have been added to the index, and 12 have been removed. The US-based companies that have been added include Agilent Technologies, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Dow Chemical, Eli Lilly, and Motorola. US-based companies removed from the index include Barrick Gold and Pfizer.

Also removed from the index was BP, the oil and gas company whose Gulf of Mexico oil spill disaster was only the most recent of its major environmental and safety calamities. Removed from the index as well was Royal Dutch Shell, whose pipelines in Nigeria spilled 14,000 tons of oil in 2009.

Launched one year ago, the NASDAQ OMX CRD Global Sustainability 50 Index includes companies that have taken leadership roles in “disclosing their carbon footprint, energy usage, water consumption, hazardous and non-hazardous waste, employee safety, workforce diversity, management composition and community investing.”

Components of the Index must produce a publicly available corporate sustainability report, and disclose sustainability data according to the guidelines of the
Global Reporting Initiative (GRI).

Almost three-quarters of the components of the Index are from the Industrials, Health Care, and Banking industrial sectors.

The sustainability investment analytics for the Index are provided by
CRD Analytics. Analysis for CRD’s evaluation of the environmental impacts, supply chains, and corporate operations of the 3700 publicly listed companies in the NASDAQ OMX global exchanges is supplied by Trucost.
