Sustainable Investing Fund Is Launched in Africa
    by Robert Kropp

The Africa Sustainability Passive Equity Fund, offered to institutional investors by Mauritius-based Sustainable Capital, will apply ESG criteria to both countries as well as companies in Africa.

The Republic of Mauritius is an island nation off the coast of the African continent in the southwest Indian Ocean. Located in Mauritius is Sustainable Capital, an investment management firm founded in 2008 whose mission is to increase opportunities for socially responsible investing (SRI) on the African Continent.

To that end, Sustainable Capital now manages the Africa Sustainability Passive Equity Fund, which the company has designated as an Expert Fund with a minimum subscription value of $100,000. The company will not market the Fund as a retail fund, but envisages that subscriptions will be sourced from institutional investors seeking an SRI exposure to the African Continent.

According to Sustainable Capital, Africa will need to refocus its growth efforts in the wake of the global financial crisis. The company designed an investment process based on the premise that sustainability performance and long-term investment performance are intrinsically linked and mutually inclusive. Its sustainability assessment system is designed to evaluate the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance of African companies.

The firm's investment process will include location-based research, company questionnaires, management interviews, site visits, and due diligence to assess corporate sustainability performance.

Sustainable Capital believes that by focusing on ESG issues, the risk-adjusted performance of investors' portfolios will be enhanced. The firm may engage with company management in an attempt to address the risks and improve the operating environment of the company when material risks are identified and assessed.

Sustainable Capital also measures and rates the sustainability performance of African countries. The Fund's investment universe will consist of companies that derive the majority of their revenues from the African continent, excluding South Africa.
